What to Expect

If you decide to participate in one of our in-person studies, you will be asked to visit our laboratory for one or more appointments. These appointments usually last about 2 hours, but may be shorter or longer.

  • Before your visit: Our research team will contact you to confirm your appointment and send you any necessary instructions, as well as directions and parking information.
  • Consent: At the beginning of the appointment, our research team will review the study procedures, answer your questions, and ask you to sign a consent form before you participate. Your participation in our studies is completely voluntary. You’re encouraged to ask questions and you may stop your participation at any time without penalty.
  • During your visit: The exact tasks you will do vary from study to study. You will likely be asked to complete questionnaires about your hearing, and to complete tasks that evaluate your hearing function. All of the tasks we complete in the lab are non-invasive and are used in audiology clinics. These tasks may include listening to tones, speech, or noise. Sometimes you will be asked to respond during a task (e.g., push a button when you hear a sound). Other times you will be asked to just listen quietly. We build in breaks for longer appointments.
  • Payment/compensation: Most studies offer compensation for your participation. Details will be sent to you by our research team.
  • Accessibility: Accessible parking is available. If you need other accommodations, please let us know before your visit. We will do our best to arrange them so that you have a safe and smooth visit.
